Horse Portraits

I'm an area photographer with a portfolio of human subjects you can see online.

I've taken an interest in adding a new line of portraits but of horses to my body of work. Equestrian portraits have a long history particularly in the area of paintings but it's my thought to do some photographically. Upon reviewing my work I suspect you'll see that not all of my portraits look strictly like photographs mind you. Some do resemble paintings.

Anyways my thought here is to offer essentially the same terms I do at times to other aspiring models which is a standard time for print contract. Basically this is where subject and artist volunteer their time for mutual benefit. As the horses owner/agent this means you would be granted permission to use the resultant images for publicity, promotional, and personal purposes. Meanwhile as is standard I retain and maintain the copyright. Sometimes with human models this can entail curtailing unauthorized uses for example but I would hazard a guess this isn't likely to come up. Nevertheless it's good in general to have your pictures and presumably your horses pictures in responsible hands.

My primary purposes in this project are pretty straight forward to understand. Firstly I'm primarily a non-commercial photographer although my work is no doubt present at many modeling agencies and in dozens of portfolios all the same. When I plan or propose a project it has to conform to the larger body of work in a gallery show sense of if. Secondly I may also elect to include portraits which result in a separate horse portfolio which I may in time show at tracks and the like in seeking further work.

That's the official version unofficially I might also acknowledge to being a horsey sort of person and simply admiring them though never having owned one admittedly. It strikes me however that like people they are likely to produce very individually unique images as they do in fact have their own personalities. The trick of course will be draw out that personality.

I see no objection to images of horse and rider with livery or even just on a casual basis. As I'd often refer a starting model to Vogue for ideas on wardrobe and whatnot I'd likely refer riders to their favorite publication or even catalog. I use a number of cameras including a couple that should be able to capture horse and rider at a canter or even full gallop while freezing it frame by frame, as conditions allow.

Over the next few days after I post this I'll likely be at The Breeders Cup, through a friend in California I've learned they are seeking to expand exposure for the event into non-traditional media and so have come by a pass to the event. Not one to pass up such a great photogenic herd of horses I likely will be in California over the weekend.

I'll check in as I'm able though and refer owners to the website where they can get a sense of the human portraiture I do. It's recommend you view it on a modern PC/Mac with a sound capability.
